It’s official! I am thrilled to announce that my dear friend and colleague, Susan Seitzer Fortuño, is joining me at Best Fit College Advising to help students and families with their college consulting needs.
This development is so exciting for me because Susan and I work together seamlessly—and have a lot of fun doing it. I believe that our partnership works because of its multidimensional nature. We became friends some 27 years ago when her first child had just been born and mine was about to arrive. We bonded through baby group and learned how much we have in common in our beliefs and approach to life. I’m sure our kids get tired of the “way back when” photos we publish on social media, but they express the joy we found in watching our kids grow up together.
Our families chose a new school and moved to Dorado the same year, and we learned a lot about education. Ten years later, Susan’s eldest child was the first of our kids to apply to college, and what an experience that was! The next year it was my son’s turn, and I credit Susan’s calming influence with maintaining my sanity and finding the joy in helping my son and his classmates through the application process.
After that, I felt it would be a shame to waste all that learning, so I added college consulting to my TASIS Dorado teaching duties. All was well until María hit right as the college application season was heating up. With the power out and communications weak, we needed a way to reassure nervous seniors and support them as they wrote as many as a couple of dozen application essays. I conceived of a new Writing Center that would feature a collaborative and supportive environment for seniors and other writers. I knew that I couldn’t do it alone, and I knew that my partner had to be Susan Fortuño.
We spent two amazing years in the “fishbowl,” in the library, in a cozy space that became a refuge for many. I think the fishbowl was such a positive place because Susan and I love the students, because we can’t survive without reading and writing ourselves so we dive into the process with the students, and because our experience as educators and mothers gives us the perspective to work with students in whatever way they need us. We understand their pressures and needs and accommodate them. And that goes for parents, too!
I left TASIS in 2019 to have greater travel flexibility to visit my son (ah, those pre-Covid days!), earn a UCLA college counseling certificate, write a book on applying to college and launch Best Fit College Advising. Susan took over as Director of the Writing Center and her role expanded to encompass even more college counseling duties. But now that her youngest is in her first year of college, Susan is ready to make a change--and that is great news for Best Fit clients!
Please schedule a consultation if you would like to see how we might help you on your college journey.

P.S. No, we do not have an official uniform! We just tend to finish each other's sentences and show up places looking alike!
