Frequently Asked Questions

  • Do you work with people from the United States and abroad?

Yes! I have worked remotely with students from California, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Massachusetts, South Dakota, Virginia,  China, Germany, India and Zimbabwe. Subject to time zones and our respective schedules and work styles, I am happy to accept US citizens living anywhere. Since I lived in Guam, Kenya, Puerto Rico and Venezuela growing up, I am attuned to Third Culture Kids, and I have worked with IB students.

  • Here in Puerto Rico, will we see you in person?

I am happy to meet via Zoom for an initial consultation. If a client is super intent on meeting a couple of times in person I can do that, but Zoom, WhatsApp and texting are the way to go. I work with Google Docs and comments for all parts of my package.

  • How do you work with different time zones?

My students have my number and we message regularly and arrange Zoom meetings after school, in the evenings and on Saturdays (Sundays during crunch time)--whenever suits our needs. I work with each family to devise a plan that serves us all, and we quickly develop a rhythm. I've worked remotely with students around the country and the world, and it has worked well.

  • Do you offer hourly consulting?

I'm there for my students and parents throughout the college admissions process, whether it’s for a marathon essay brainstorming session or a quick text about an upcoming webinar they shouldn’t miss. Additionally, a college application is more than the sum of its parts. I believe that the path to successful college admissions lies in a cohesive approach to all of the many elements of the applications. However, if that really doesn't work for you, I offer a limited amount of counseling for the hourly rate of $200.

  • Do you still offer separate SAT prep?

I’m sorry, but I did not make the switch to the digital SAT. There are lots of wonderful test prep people out there, or with a little discipline, you can prep on your own. I highly recommend The SAT Black Book for tips and techniques and Khan Academy for practice.

  • When do we start the college application process?

The process really starts when the student chooses those 9th grade courses, because rigor and context matter, along with what he/she/they are doing outside the classroom. If your student is planning to apply to selective colleges don’t panic, but do think about how today’s choices will impact tomorrow’s college options. However, I only work with students starting in their junior year. I accept seniors on a space available basis.

  • I don’t think we’ll qualify for financial aid but I can’t afford those high sticker prices? Are we stuck?

I don’t dive into your personal finances or work with financial forms, but I share tools for calculating your estimated cost at individual schools, strategies for winning merit scholarships, tools for understanding and weighing financial aid offers and help requesting a reevaluation when necessary. When you find those best-fit colleges, they can be more affordable than you expect!

  • My kid hates to write—can you really help with essays?

I really can. It’s my superpower! If I can get 53 8th graders to each write an argumentative essay on To Kill a Mockingbird, complete with a thesis statement and conclusion, I can help your kid to write a compelling essay that highlights his/her/their strongest traits and characteristics. I'm not saying it will be a breeze, but I have worked successfully with hundreds of student essays, from every style of learner and writer. I will talk and brainstorm with a variety of techniques until I find what works for your student.

  • How often do you meet?

That depends on the student. Some students need closer contact with supervision and weekly meetings while others rely on my expertise in the background but want to check in less frequently. It also requires more flexibility when more time zones separate us, but I have made it work from countries around the world! Students can check in as needed, or I can schedule regular weekly meetings. I respond to essay work daily with comments and all day at crunch time, and I'm always available to my families by text/messaging. I like to have one WhatsApp/text going between me and the student and another whole family chat so that we are all on the same page.

  • Can you help my organization or group?

Yes! I support other consultants with essay work and can give schools and other groups workshops on writing essays (student-oriented), coaching writers (counselor/teacher-oriented) and writing recommendation letters. My organization fees start at $500. Book a free consultation through the "Contact" page.
